I cannot believe that Professor Lazlofi the notorious technophobe has beaten me to an introduction on the computer. I feel as if I should be ashamed.

I am professor Aimee Vassar. You can call me either Aimee or Professor Vassar, whichever you are more comfortable with. I will be teaching beginner and intermediate science this semester. Once classes begin, I will get a feel for how much knowledge you as students already have on the subject, and I will develop a clearer lesson plan from there. If you have any concerns, please feel free to contact me. Questions are always welcome.

I will, however, request now before it is allowed to become a problem that students please refrain from bringing cellular phones to class. If you absolutely cannot bear to leave it in your dorm room, at least have it turned off or on silent. Please, do not leave it on vibrate. Some at this school have incredibly sensitive hearing and can get distracted by mysterious buzzing noises.

Now that the business is out of the way, I'll introduce myself more properly. I am a vampire and I should probably be ashamed to admit that I'm 350 years old at last count. Miklos might have to correct me if I'm a few years off. I am a born witch, but I'm afraid I have never learned how to use the gifts I was born with due to some unfortunate circumstances. Perhaps someday I will find a way to develop them. I teach science because I love it. While I've never had a true formal education and cannot prove with degrees my expertise, I've extensively studied the developments and changes to science over time. The Earth sciences, particularly Geology, are particularly interesting to me.

If you have any concerns, please feel free to contact me. Questions are always welcome.

    Week Eight: Thursday Evening
I know I have made this announcement before, but apparently it didn't stick when I simply said it in class. I would like to remind all of my students (and probably the students of other teachers as well, since I strongly doubt this problem is limited only to my classroom) to please leave their cell phones turned off and out of sight during class time. Not only do I know that you're text messaging when you look down at your lap instead of at your notebooks, but I can hear the phones left on vibrate. I'm sure your social lives can wait until class is over. If you have a valid reason why you need to leave your phone on during class, such as a family emergency, talk to me before class begins and I will make an exception. Otherwise, text messaging while I'm trying to give instruction is disrespectful. It also suggests that perhaps you are bored and need more difficult coursework if you no longer deem it necessary to pay attention.

Time for an introduction, I suppose, or a re-introduction actually. My name is Aimee Vassar. If any of you were around prior to the end of 2004, you might remember me as a science professor. I have come back from sabbatical and am looking forward to teaching once more. To those of you in mid and late afternoon science classes with me, I look forward to meeting each of you later today. The previous instructor has left notes on what you've covered thus far, and I believe the remainder of this term will be very interesting.

    An assignment for Monday:
Please read all of Chapter 16 in your textbooks. I do have a tendency to begin class with pop quizzes or class discussions, so homework is not optional if you'd like your marks to stay high. If you have any questions over the reading, please do not hesitate to ask.
